I'm Douwe Rienstra (I go by my middle name, inherited from my Dutch grandfather). After medical school at Duke and seeing more need in general practice than in the specialties, I practiced independently for 50 years, the last 40 in Port Townsend.
Throughout my career, I've resisted the arbitrary divide between pharmaceutical and natural medicine. As I often tell people, "There is medicine that works, and medicine that doesn’t work." My medical education ranged from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota to Maharishi Nagar, India, teaching me that effective medical care draws from many traditions.
I closed my Kearney Street office in 2023. After attending to important family matters, I'm now focused on what I believe matters most: helping us put aside our misery and choose trust over mistrust and love over indifference.
