Coffee
The Journal of the AMA reports that people who drink more than six cups of coffee a day have almost double the amount of coronary heart disease as those who drink less. Coffee pulls magnesium out of the body, which can lead to arteriosclerosis, irregular heartbeat, and brittle bones. For those of you who have given up eggs and bacon for breakfast, this may be a bitter blow.
Console yourself by remembering that coffee may benefit some people with asthma, and that it has other medicinal uses as well. We should regard it as it is: a drug.
Breakfast
Our favorite breakfast drink is a cup of hot milk with cardamom (which reduces the tendency of milk to cause mucus). People of differing psychophysiological constitutions do better with different breakfasts, and some people do better with no breakfast at all.
Nutrition
If you aren't assimilating your food it won't do you as much good. Digestion is one of the most important functions of our body. If it is faulty, we may become deficient in essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, or other vital nutrients. Without proper nutrition, the healing abilities of the body are impaired.
Over a decade of study of nutrition has shown me that western nutritional science is in dire need of a coherent basis. In the past two years of study of Ayur-Veda, we've had much better success. Ayur-Veda recognizes that people come in differing psycho-physiological types, and suggests appropriate diets for each person. If digestion is good, then health has a chance to be perfect.
